Can you ever truly escape your past?

That's the question which haunts Connie, a journalist on a small fictional island in this 10-part audio drama series, 'Echoes of Shadows.'

Connie was never popular in school. She had to lose herself in order to fit in. Now in her 30s, it doesn’t seem as though any jobs are a good fit for her: her degree in English Literature took her to journalism which she isn’t sure is actually what she wants to do. Her life just seems to be a never-ending rollercoaster of lows and more lows going off the rails every year. It might seem on the surface she’s got it all figured out but in reality, she’s sinking.

Fiadh is living in a flat with no electricity or food. She’s too embarrassed to ask for help. Her dad is a drug addict and she has unfortunately gone the same way: heroin just seems to have that kick to make her forget about everything.

Connie hasn’t seen Fi since 2015. And the last time they saw each other it was kind of complicated. When they reunite, it’s as if nothing has changed, but their lives have massively.

‘Echoes of Shadows’ was written and directed by Helen McKenna and hopes to bring to light topics such as addiction, domestic and sexual abuse, poverty and mental health to raise awareness for Isle of Man Foodbank, Motiv8 and Victim Support Isle of Man.

Author of ‘Echoes of Shadows’

Author of the series, Helen McKenna, has previously worked as a journalist at various news outlets, including ITV Granada Reports, 3FM, Isle of Man Newspapers and Energy FM.

Speaking on the reasons behind the writing, Helen explained, “Throughout my journalistic career, I spoke to individuals who had suffered sexual or domestic abuse, were dealing with mental health struggles, or lost someone to suicide or drug overdoses, as well as those who are helping them in charities such as Victim Support, Motiv8 and the Foodbank. In my personal life, I’ve experienced the loss of those close to me who struggled with mental health or addiction.

“I hope the drama will help raise awareness for people who have been through similar circumstances, or know anyone that has, and to highlight the theatrical talent we have here on-Island.”
